Leprosy bacillus, also known as Mycobacterium leprae, is a bacterial pathogen that causes the chronic infection known as leprosy. There are several synonyms for the word "leprosy bacillus" which are often used interchangeably. Some of these synonyms include Hansen's bacillus, which is named after the Norwegian physician Armauer Hansen who discovered the bacteria in 1873.
