Madhouses, also known as asylums, psychiatric hospitals, mental institutions, or sanatoriums, have long been associated with the treatment of mental illness. In earlier times, they were often referred to as lunatic asylums or insane asylums. Other synonyms include mental hospitals, psych wards, and the loony bin. These terms are slowly being phased out, however, as they have negative connotations and can be perceived as derogatory. Today, the preferred terminology for these facilities are psychiatric hospitals or behavioral health centers. Whatever term is used, the purpose of these institutions remains the same - to provide care and support for individuals with mental health issues.
